COOLER DAYS CALL FOR COZY COOPS
Shorter days, cooler weather and a few flying feathers mean fall has arrived. Here’ s a few tips for how to help your flock stay comfortable from Purina Nutritionist and Flock Expert Patrick Biggs, Ph. D.
01 COOP COZY-UPS
A little fall maintenance now helps keep your flock comfortable when temperatures drop. Check for drafts, repair leaks and make sure the coop stays dry while maintaining good airflow.
02 GOODBYE SUMMER, HELLO SHORTER DAYS
As daylight decreases, hens naturally lay fewer eggs. Supplemental lighting can help maintain egg production through winter, but a seasonal slowdown in egg production is normal if you choose not to add light.
03 THE FEATHER REFRESH
If your hens look a little rough around the edges this fall, don’ t worry. Molting is a normal part of the process as birds replace old feathers with new ones. Feathers are made of protein, so your hens may benefit from additional nutritional support during this seasonal transition. Purina ® Layena ® + High Protein Layer Feed provides added protein for regrowing feathers.
04 FUEL FOR FALL
Cooler weather means chickens need more energy to stay warm. Always provide access to fresh, unfrozen water and a complete feed, such as Purina ® Layena ® 16 % Layer Hen Feed, to support hen health and egg production.
