Small farms and rural life are rapidly gaining favor as a callback to a simpler life. Over the past five years, I’ ve learned from neighbors, master gardeners and chicken keepers that, even as an amateur, I can manage 10 acres. Some days, it takes a village. On other days, I’ m happy to spend an hour alone with the chickens; they’ re therapy in many ways.
I’ m truly honored to take on the role of senior editor for AcreageLife magazine. With a heart full of excitement, I’ m inspired to bring you the most engaging and inspiring content about modern country living. This moment feels akin to planting the initial seeds in a garden that promises growth, discovery and a bounty of stories to share.
AcreageLife has long been a mirror reflecting the soul of rural living— its challenges and beauty. To be entrusted with this legacy is a privilege. In honoring the incredible foundation laid by Jonathan Reed; this and future issues will reflect community-driven storytelling and expert pieces that inform, educate and ignite conversations. Thanks to Jonathan, AcreageLife is poised for a new season of growth.
I invite you to be an active part of this publication. Share your experiences, challenges and triumphs with us. Together, we can cultivate a magazine that embodies the diversity of acreage living. As I dive into this month’ s sustainable living issue, I am reminded of a quote by Wendell Berry,“ The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all, our most pleasing responsibility.”
In this issue, you’ ll learn from other amateurs what simple country living means to them— and we have a delicious molasses cookie recipe! Plus, as you learn how to clean cast iron over coffee, enjoy our feature on“ Green Thumbs, Greener Pastures,” as Judith Horvath, shepherdess at Fair Hill Farm and regenerative agriculture consultant, teaches our readers( and staff) how to grow, eat and live sustainably.
I look forward to learning with you!
