Enjoying the Dog Days of Summer
Sometimes, spring blends right into summer without warning in the Pacific Northwest. Around Oregon and Washington, we all wait until Fourth of July, which locals call the official start of summer. Now, we’ re well into the dog days of summer, and this is easily my favorite time of year. Many believe that rainfall is a bad omen during this time, and I couldn’ t agree more!
The dog days of summer carry a rich tapestry of historical connotations that have echoed through the centuries. This term is steeped in ancient beliefs about intense summer heat and its perceived impact on flora, fauna and human behavior.
Beat the heat is this issue’ s theme and, in ancient Greece and Rome, the dog days were believed to be a time of drought, bad luck and unrest, when dogs and men alike would be driven mad by the extreme heat.
Shifting away from these reflections on the dog days, the current month’ s issue has sparked a newfound motivation for embarking on household and late-summer garden projects. With the impending harvest season beckoning, the timing couldn’ t be more perfect for exploring how to plant root vegetables, which sets the stage for a bountiful yield and a vibrant garden landscape as the seasons
